The current season is not only dark and, in parts, stressful but also brings with it wet and cold weather. This combination increasingly leads to common colds.
Statistics from the Robert Koch Institute show that currently 5.8 million people per week are affected by a new acute respiratory illness. In winter, the incidence is almost three times higher at 7,000-10,000 affected people per 100,000 inhabitants compared to summer with 2,000-4,000 affected people per 100,000 inhabitants.
The reasons for a higher susceptibility in winter are manifold and are due to many people spending more time and longer in poorly ventilated indoor spaces, where viruses spread more easily. Dry indoor air due to increased heating reduces humidity. This dries out the mucous membranes in the nose and throat, which impairs their protective function and makes it easier for viruses to penetrate. The cold itself can weaken the defense mechanisms of the upper respiratory tract. Studies suggest that the immune defense in the nose is less effective at low temperatures. Furthermore, some cold viruses may be more stable or spread better at lower temperatures.
As always, we can proactively do something to prevent colds and protect ourselves as best as possible. Pay attention to good hygiene by washing your hands regularly and touching your face as little as possible. Ventilate enclosed rooms at least once an hour. Strengthen your immune system with a healthy diet rich in vitamin C and B12, zinc, and magnesium. Get some fresh air and try to get enough restful sleep. Drink about 2 liters of water or unsweetened tea (e.g., thyme, Cistus, echinacea) daily to keep your mucous membranes moist. Good digestion is also crucial, because, as we have already learned, an intact gut flora particularly positively influences the immune system.
In addition to these general recommendations, the immune system can be further strengthened, as not everything is always possible. With PDB, we have scientifically combined other important plant-based ingredients to support the immune system and strengthen it.
We have based our "Immune" product on the following active ingredient logic:
Agaricus blazeii is a medicinal mushroom traditionally used to support the immune system. It contains beta-glucans and polysaccharides that strengthen the immune defense and activate the body's own defense system. This mushroom has strong antioxidant properties that protect cells from oxidative stress.
Reishi is another mushroom with strong immune-boosting properties. Studies from China show that its polysaccharides activate the immune system, prevent inflammation, and even help defend against cancer cells in the gut. Reishi has an adaptogenic effect and helps support the body during stressful times.
Glutathione is one of the strongest antioxidants in the body and plays a central role in detoxification and protection against oxidative stress. The acetylated form of S-Acetyl-Glutathione ensures improved bioavailability and supports the body's own defenses and cell health.
Lactoferrin promotes the growth and activity of immune cells and supports the maturation and differentiation of specific defense cells. Here too, scientific studies explain the effect of lactoferrin in the signaling chain of the immune defense. In infections, it promotes immune defense, while in excessive inflammation, it acts as an anti-inflammatory and limits tissue damage. Thyme and licorice extracts in combination with the mineral zinc, as well as liposomal vitamin C and D3, support the mucous membranes in their defense function.
In times of high stress, additional intake in combination with our essentials Vitamin D, B Complex, and Magnesium and/or the gut therapeutic Core Balance is also recommended.
