Have you ever heard of the "Blue Zones" ?
The Blue Zones are regions that serve as excellent examples of how to live healthily past 100 and, above all, how to lead a fulfilling life well into old age. Anyone interested in the topic of longevity will inevitably encounter the scientific findings of the Blue Zones.
As early as 1998, the Swiss group studied the eating habits of the population of the Yuzurihara region in Japan, where residents enjoy a very high quality of life and live to a very old age. Another research group from the University of California, in collaboration with the University of Rome La Sapienza, also investigated Blue Zone areas in Italy, located outside of Sardinia.
The term "Blue Zones" was trademarked by American researcher Dan Buettner. In 2023, he even produced a TV mini-documentary series, "Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones." The concept originated from a 2004 demographic study by Michel Poulain and colleagues, published in the Journal of Experimental Gerontology, which identified the province of Nuoro in Sardinia as the region with the highest concentration of male centenarians. Buettner and demographer Gianni Pes marked villages with longevity populations in Sardinia on a map with a blue pen. They designated the area within the circle as a "Blue Zone." Together with Pes and Poulain, Buettner expanded the term, applying it to validated longevity regions and publishing the results in National Geographic magazine.
The term "Blue Zones" is now used to describe five regions on Earth where people not only live exceptionally long lives—the proportion of people well over 100 years old is particularly high there—but also enjoy remarkably good health and, consequently, a high quality of life. These Blue Zones are the Okinawa Islands in Japan, Ikaria in Greece, Sardinia in Italy, Nicoya in Costa Rica, and Loma Linda in California .
For a long time, it was assumed that people in these regions ingested some kind of special substance that bestowed upon them health and a long life. Surprisingly, these patients hardly take any medication, but instead are characterized by a special "lifestyle of normality".
For these people , moderate but regular physical activity is an integral part of life. This means they walk every day, but don't run marathons or engage in intense fitness workouts. They pay attention to a moderate, balanced intake of energy and don't try to eat until they are full every day. They prefer a plant-based diet with a high proportion of legumes, corn, and squash, and little animal protein. They consume alcohol in moderation, primarily wine. Smoking is generally frowned upon.
On the other hand, they pay attention to stress reduction through conscious rest periods, relaxation in nature , and a meaningful content in their lives.
The social environment is very important to the people in the Blue Zones. There are very strong family ties and friendships, as well as well-functioning private networks where people support each other. A certain degree of religiosity and spirituality also plays a role. Loneliness, which currently affects both younger and older people equally in this country, is relatively rare in the Blue Zones.
Loneliness is a risk factor for the development of depression, and mental illnesses are now even the main cause of inability to work.
As the Interheart study demonstrated years ago, a conscious and healthy lifestyle accounts for approximately 60% of healthy aging . It should be emphasized again that the goal is to age healthily and fitly. While this can lead to a very advanced age, it is not necessarily the primary objective.
Without a doubt, the intake of essential nutrients for vital and age-related processes in the body is crucial, and nutritional deficiencies are often a key reason for poor well-being. To prevent this, a healthy lifestyle can be further optimized by adding well-dosed, high-quality dietary supplements that specifically target the aging process at the levels of energy, anti-inflammatory properties, and tissue (senolysis) and cell cleansing (autophagy). Our comprehensive product "Smart Age," with its select secondary plant compounds, targets precisely these mechanisms.
Anyone who wants to actively orient themselves towards a more balanced and better everyday life in line with the "Blue Zones" should, in addition to adequate exercise and social contacts, definitely optimize their diet and also fill any possible gaps with supplements such as Smart Age.
